Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to approve a ban on plastic carry bags.  The City Council voted 13 to 1 to phase out plastic bags over the next 16 months at an estimated 7,500 stores, meaning shoppers will need to bring reusable bags or purchase paper bags for 10 cents each.  Read more at the LA Times Blog.

This is great news!  Who will be next?

Responsible Consumption in Union Square, NYC http://bagsforthepeople.org/?p=665 http://bagsforthepeople.org/?p=665#comments Mon, 23 Apr 2012 00:29:09 +0000 Glenn http://bagsforthepeople.org/?p=665

GrowNYC, The Interdependence Project, Bags for the People, and the Pratt Public Project Initiative have kicked off a greener greenmarket on Earth Day, placing forth sustainable environmental programs(composting, textile recycling, e-waste recycling) at all the greenmarkets throughout NYC as well as implementing the early phases of a plan to rid New Yorkers of plastic bags!

Instrumental to this plastic bag plan was the Pratt Public Project and The Interdependance Project’s plastic bag mandala.  The mandala helped to bring awareness, cooperation, and action to the public about the ill effects of plastic bags and what positive action can be done.  Greenmarket patrons signed a pledge, placed their plastic bag on the mandala, and received a free reusable bag.

Stay tuned for more good news on the NYC plastic bag front.
